Storing Your Sensory Play Fillers

Storing Your Sensory Play Fillers

One of the most frequently asked questions I get from customers of my sensory play shop is the best way to store their sensory play fillers after purchasing. When stored properly, dry sensory play fillers can last for years and years. Any storage option you choose should keep your fillers away from moisture and critters. You may think mice won't eat painted pasta ... you would be wrong.

Fillers CAN be kept in their original bags or a ziploc bag for as long as you own them. There is no need to decant your fillers into another container. I personally keep many years worth of fillers in their original bags inside of this latching storage bin for extra protection.

If you have seen my office filler wall, you know that I personally store my fillers in these clear cylindrical containers. While I do believe this is the most visually pleasing option, it is also the most cost-heavy upfront! Pros of the cylinders: comes in two matching sizes for 3 or 5 cup jars, come in a variety of lid colors, easy to open and close, airtight and secure lids. Cons like I mentioned include price ($2/each) and that they come in a pack of 16.

A very popular option among "play moms" is the Container Store Accessory Bins. While I do own 98 of these, I don't personally use them for filler storage. Pros of these containers: lower priced at ($1-1.50 each depending on qty), roomy enough to store matching accessories, stackable. Cons of these for me include that the lids simply latch on and do not lock tightly - making them prone to accidental spillage. I love these for storing seasonal/themed resin and loose parts.

The most budget-friendly option is any type of deli/food/leftovers container. I tested these 32oz deli containers for you and they hold 3-cups straight from my sensory play filler bags perfectly with a little bit of room left over for 6 mini trees or a couple of resin pieces. Cons of these are not as cute if that is important to you, and reviews do indicated that lids can break or tear. I did not purchase a larger size option but a 48oz container should hold your 5-cup bags of filler.

Summary

Fillers can be stored in their original bags for years!

30oz Cylindrical Jars: $2/each hold 3 cups
46oz Cylindrical Jars: $3.83/each - hold 5 cups
Container Store Accessory Bins: $1-1.50/each - hold 3-5 cups
32 oz Deli Soup Containers: $.55/each - hold 3.5 cups

I hope these options are helpful on how to organize and store your sensory play fillers! If you have questions, feel free to leave a comment!!
